Just like mental health, diversity and inclusion are important issues that are now being officially recognised by workplaces around the world. Especially in the world of retail, many consumers now align with brands that utilise diverse practices, which is why diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) should be one of the core values of any retail business.

The Importance of DEI in Retail

Aside from the fact that it is the right thing to do, inclusive workforce strategies in retail allow for a higher return on investment and a plethora of other business benefits. Retail often deals with customers, and it is important to showcase a diverse workforce that everyone can relate to – representation always matters. Inclusion in the retail sector also means having a work environment where everyone can feel welcome regardless of their race, gender or beliefs, and everyone gets equal opportunities. When inclusive workforce strategies are put in place, it could cultivate a harmonious working relationship among everyone, which can help motivate them to perform their duties well.

DEI Strategies in Retail

Diversity in retail recruitment means focusing on more than just the hiring part; it also means implementing best practices to maintain it.

Forming a diverse interview panel allows for a more thorough approach to hiring, where they can agree on points that don’t always get covered in typical interviews.

Staff training and development is also essential for existing employees where they can properly understand the basic principles of DEI and how it can be implemented in a retail setting. This includes different communication styles and approaches to provide better customer service.

Retail companies who push for DEI practice sometimes forget to offer the same experience on their online portals. This means having an accessible website that can cater to any customer could help drive up sales as it taps into diverse customers.

A good DEI initiative can definitely aid in a company’s success, especially when the right strategies are applied and lead to having a stronger workforce. While a lot of companies still have a long way to go when it comes to diversity in retail recruitment efforts, the number of those implementing such strategies is also on the rise.
